Free treasure hunt games for children

A little while ago, I took Ned to his friend Q’s birthday party. Q and his family live on a lovely property with lots of trees, perfect for this party game.

It’s a treasure hunt with a difference.

  • To make it, you’ll need as many paddle pop (ice lolly) sticks as you have children coming to the party. Say, 10.
  • You’ll also need a whole lot of that gift wrapping curly ribbon stuff, in as many colours as you can find. And a little prize for each child, wrapped up in tissue paper.
  1. Tape the end of a curly ribbon to a pop stick, and blue tac the pop stick to your front/side/back door, wherever you’ll begin the hunt. Everyone begins at the same place. Pop a name on the pop stick too.
  2. Then, begin unwinding your curly ribbon as you walk away from the door. Now the fun begins. Venture high, venture low, venture wherever you can go!  In among the trees, around the trees a few times, over logs, under tables, over chairs, around poles… go wherever a child could go. The child needs to be able to easily follow the treasure ribbon.
  3. When you’ve explored your garden a bit with curly ribbon in tow, stop. Now tie the end to the gift and place the gift on the floor, in the bush, on a chair or ledge, or wherever you’ve ended up. Keep the surprise going a little longer by making sure the gift is out of sight.
  4. Do this for every child’s treasure.

Yes, it takes a bit of time to set up but it also occupies the children for AGES! Winding, winding, winding up the string as they go, stepping over all the ribbons and through the maze of colourful chaos before they finally spread out and reach their own prize.

Little ones may need a bit of help, but older ones are pretty DIY.

Grab a cuppa and watch them go…  (fabulous school holiday activity too!)

Ned won a mini water pistol. As his dad is a water gun fanatic, this was just perfect!
